The government’s newly-published Building Bulletin (BB101) may force many schools to upgrade heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) equipment in order to achieve indoor air quality targets.
The requirements of BB101 (‘Guidelines on ventilation, thermal comfort and indoor air quality in schools’) include:
- Fresh air rate of five litres per second per person
- ‘Purge’ fresh air rate of eight litres per second per person for new-build teaching spaces
- Mechanical ventilation systems must reduce CO2 to below 1,000 parts per million (ppm)
- CO2 levels not to exceed 1,500ppm for more than 20 minutes in new classrooms (1,750ppm in refurbished spaces)
