Here at Gibbons we are looking forward to a visit from local school children as they join us for an open day designed to give them a taste of the opportunities a career in engineering can offer.
Celebrating our 50th Anniversary this year, we are looking forwards to our next 50 years, and are keen to inspire the next generation of young engineers.
Engineering is all around us, from the computer or phone you are reading this on, to the home you live in, to cars, to parachutes, to rockets. The opportunities offered by a career in engineering are varied, challenging and give young people the power to make a real difference in the world.
Yet, not enough young people – especially girls – are considering a career in engineering when they think about their futures. In 2018, only 12% of engineering professionals in the UK were women, and the industry is struggling to recruit future talent.
It is therefore important to make a real effort to make sure girls and boys are aware of the opportunities available to them with a career in engineering, so we can’t wait to invite our local year 6 students to our workshop and offices this July.
The students will take part in a number of varied activities with us, including building a spaghetti bridge, making an electric motor and designing and building a water filter.
Keep an eye on our social media to see how they get on!
